What to do when a Death Occurs at Home:

Call 911 to reach emergency personnel. Law enforcement officers will pronounce the time of death and assign a case number. Upon authorization from the law enforcement officer, your loved one may be removed to a crematory or funeral home. Usually, the responding officer will stay at your home until the funeral home or crematory staff arrives.

When a Death Occurs in a Care Facility:

The care facility staff will, so long as it is on record, notify the funeral home or cremation provider. Your loved one will be transferred to the funeral home or cremation provider upon release. Provide contact information to the care facility if a funeral home or cremation provider is not on record.

When a Death Occurs under Hospice Care:

Contact your hospice care providers. The hospice providers will notify proper authorities and the funeral home or cremation provider. When the authorities release your loved one, he or she will be transferred to the funeral home or cremation provider.
